Laboring the Differences, Embracing the New

I don't care what anyone says, I still prefer the Nelson Art Gallery in Kansas City.

Although the Art Institute in Chicago was really fabulous.  And the Yale Art Gallery...not so bad.  And any part of the Vatican.  And the Gallery of Art in Scotland, whatever that place was called.

But just for argument's sake, I will leave the comparisons only to the Nelson Art Gallery, because anything in Europe is most likely going to be better.

This has been a running theme since Mister Man first pitched the idea of a Sacramento move.  "Everything will be better than Kansas."  He'll deny this, but he has used this to argue for stores, libraries, schools, weather, museums, etc.  And The Redhead and I will tell you without a doubt, the library IS NOT better.  I'm still processing the school differences (and adding in a newly broken wrist isn't helping their case).  Old Sacramento was awesome.  But so many of my favorite stores aren't even here in this area.  And yes, the weather is much, much better.  The weather is...perfect.  Even though it did something different today, on Labor Day of all days.

But we headed out to the local art museum.  They were doing a special art program for the kids and people could get in free during the morning.  Free is the best time to check out something new!

They had lots of things children could make, including origami and cowboy scarves, just for this event.  They even had a petting zoo and some games set up, also just for this event.  And as cool as all of that was, it did not compare to the wonder that is the Nelson Art Gallery.  I love everything about the Nelson.  It is a Kansas City marvel.  And they have giant shuttlecocks!  But regardless of that, I also wholeheartedly believe in art education. I believe in culture.  So if you're visiting a new city, whether you've moved there or you're on vacation, you should always make time for art.  Whether you get it or not.  This also applies to the Crocker Museum here in Sacramento.  Culture is always worth the experience.  And even though it's not the Nelson, I'm sure we'll still return.

We left the museum and headed to the Chalk it Up Festival.  Being new in Sacramento, we wanted to check out some of these local events and festivals.  Find our place in this new city.  And it's funny, because during recent talks with locals, they had no idea any of this was going on.

We were fearful the rain would ruin all the chalk art, but it didn't seem to, as the rain has been quite brief.  And an insurance company set up this amazing opportunity for some tie-dye!  Thank you, State Farm.  We were already customers, but thanks for letting a one armed redhead make a mess anyway.

We attempted to eat in Downtown, and next thing you know, we headed to one of our new favorite restaurants instead, Pete's.  In Eldorado Hills.  Not exactly downtown.  But we discovered half price pizzas on Mondays! Whoa, what?!  And that pizza was to die for.  They also have a whole gluten-free menu!

We also stopped by Petco for some Star Wars toys.  They're new, and we needed them.

Rather, the cat needed them.

They were also giving away free Yoda ears as a promotion, and Fudge always loves an excuse to get a treat.

And as many differences as we keep facing here, they're not all bad.  Not even close.
They're just....different.
